Hans Wegner

Born in 1914 in Tønder, a town in southern Denmark, Hans Wegner is considered the pioneering furniture designer of the twentieth century. The Danish architect was part of the spectacular generation referred to as ‘the Golden Age’. Wegner began his career as an apprentice with Danish master cabinet maker H.F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old and subsequently entered the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts in 1936 before setting out as a furniture designer. After receiving his architectural degree in 1938, he worked as a designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Muller’s architectural office before establishing his own in 1943.

With Hans Wegner’s love of natural materials and deep understanding of furniture, which is both functional and beautiful, he constantly strived towards organic simplicity. Considered one of the most creative, innovative, and prolific Danish furniture designers, Wegner has designed some of the most recognisable furniture pieces today. One of his most well-known designs is the CH24 Wishbone Chair for Carl Hansen & Son , which has been in continuous production since 1950. This timeless deign has made up the core line-up from Carl Hansen for a long time. Another one of his most recognisable pieces is the CH07 Shell Chair which is a striking seating solution with a very distinctive and eye-catching design.

Famous for integrating perfectly executed joints with exquisite shapes and combining them with a constant curiosity for materials and respect for wood and its natural characteristics. As an Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art and winner of countless international accolades, including the Lunning Prize, Wegner’s designs have also been awarded with places in the permanent collection of New York’s MoMA and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Making mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale, Hans Wegner’s designs are both iconic and high quality, with a continuous process of purification and simplification.
