So, without further ado, let us introduce to you, Flos.
Backstory
It all began back in the late 1950’s when two Italian furniture designers found themselves in need of a change of path. Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina joined forced and Flos as established in the alpine town of Merano in 1960. This leap of faith came with the wise words “every great success comes from taking risks or from the courage to bet.” The name “Flos” came from the Latin word for ‘flower’, with the connotation that glorious and innovative designs could blossom from a simple light bulb.
As the company grew, as did their vision, with renowned lighting designers from across the globe participating in collaborations and innovative designs with Flos. Soon after their move to Brescia, Flos released one of their most iconic designs which continues to be a bestseller to this very day, the Arco Floor Lamp. Designed in 1962 by Archille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Arco encompasses the rounded style of the 1960’s, whilst expressing forward thinking design in the form of it’s simple and understated colour palette.

Staying relevant has seemingly come with ease for Flos, continuously producing iconic and innovative designs which push the boundaries of not only the lighting market, but the interiors market as a whole. No doubt there has been plenty of blood, sweat and tears behind the scenes, evident in their consistently high quality results. No aspect spared. Considered right down to the smallest detail. By uniting art and design hand in hand, Flos have sustained imagination for over 50 years.
Continuing their innovations, when Piero Gandini became the new owner of Flos in 2005, he channelled the founders’ mantra and radically introduced LED bulbs into Flos’ design and production process. This incredible innovation lead to the forming of ‘Flos Architectural Lighting’, a sector of the company dedicated to providing lighting solutions to large commercial and public spaces. This spurred on designs for outdoor spaces as well as truly functional pieces of art. The introduction of LEDs gave Flos and their designers a whole new avenue of creation to explore, no longer confined by conventional light bulbs.
To this day, Flos are continuously releasing the new, the weird and the wonderful. Upholding their innovator status. We have compiled a selection of our favourite pieces from Flos to share with you and we hope you’re as seduced by their Italian charm as we are.

At first glance the String Pendant Lights appear to be simple and generic, but take a closer look and you’ll discover they are so much more. Choose between two pendant shapes, Sphere and Cone, then decide on your cable length. Cable length? I hear you ask. Why does that matter? A whole lot, it turns out. In fact, where majority of pendant lights on the market focus on the design of the shade itself, the String Pendants keep the creative license and exploration for the cable.
